Japan puts together sector-specific approach for CO2 emissions reduction

Japan has compiled a sector-specific approach on reducing greenhouse gas emissions for a post-Kyoto Protocol framework, but critics say the absence of nation-specific caps will result in the plan’s failure.
The government hopes to win agreement for its plan at the Group of Eight summit in Hokkaido’s Lake Toyako area in July.
The plan has eight major proposals to curb global warming and will be presented at a March meeting in Bangkok of an ad hoc working group of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP).
In its proposal, the Japanese government has identified eight sectors subsequently broken down into various industries.
Taking the steel industry as an example, calculations will be made on how much emissions can be reduced to produce a ton of crude steel if highly energy efficient technology is used.
