Tepco, Tokyo Univ To Build Oceanic Wind Power Facility

Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Monday announced plans to launch a field study of oceanic wind power generation with the University of Tokyo.
Tepco will erect an 80-meter-tall wind observation tower around 3km off the shore of Choshi, Chiba Prefecture. The collected data -- including wind strength and direction and wave conditions -- will be used to create designs to improve power generation capacity, develop countermeasures against typhoons, and verify the effects of wind turbines on surrounding ecosystems.
The field study will run for five years at a total cost of around 1.33 billion yen.
Wind turbine construction costs are higher out on the ocean than on land, but higher power generation capacity is anticipated because of stronger winds over the seas. The power producer is looking to commercialize wind power as a form of green energy that emits no carbon dioxide.
