Practical English Lesson 5

I have mainly explained how to get the capability to listen to the “Live English” from Lesson 1 to Lesson4.
I have to say the most important thing about listening here.
That is “Do not try to listen to all of what persons say”.
It is not possible that we listen to all of what are said even in Japanese.
If you try to make all contents of the audiotape to be spoken in Japanese express in writing, you understand that you do not listen to all of what are said in Japanese.
Then, it is not possible that we listen to all of what are said in English.
In fact, when we listen to what are said in Japanese, we presume and understand it.("PRESUMING" IS THE KEY POINT)
In a similar manner, when we listen to what are said in English, we should presume and understand it. If we could listen to 70% of what are said in English, we could understand it
almost perfectly. Even if 50%, we could almost understand it.
In the second place, I explain how to get the capability of Speaking in English.
The most excellent method is “Shadowing”.
“Shadowing” means the training to echo someone’s words.
When we see the movie in English, please echo actor’s or actress’s words quickly before they say the next words.
Because this training makes you get tired, I think the time for training is max. 5~10 minutes.
Furthermore, “Shadowing” is the effective method, when you talk with foreign national in English. If you could not understand what he says, you should use “Shadowing”( to echo someone’s words). When you use “Shadowing” and what you echo his words is wrong, he will correct your wrong words without the anathematic feeling.
In Japan, when we cannot understand what foreign national says in English, we learned to use “Pardon” in schools. But we should not use “Pardon” as much as possible. Because, when we explain something in Japanese with heart and soul to someone and finish that, if he says “I cannot understand what you said”, how do you feel? Maybe, you will feel “I do not want to talk with him again”. The case in Japanese is the same as in English.
We, Japanese, had learned a lot of wrong things in schools. When I graduated the University, joined to the company and began to do the business all over the world, I had experienced hardships very much. So I redid the study of English.
All of what I have explained base on my experience.
To study English is not difficult, because children in U.S.A., United Kingdom etc. use English at will. I do not teach English literature or English philology in my lesson.
What I teach is “How to study the Practical English”.
