CLIMATE BATTLE: Cows Tested In Simulator To Prepare For Warmer Earth

At the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science, located in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, researchers simulate hot and humid conditions in eight showcase-like containers to examine the impact on cows, pigs and other livestock.
For example, an unlucky Holstein cow was put into one of the containers filled with the air temperature over 30 C and humidity of 80% for research on the change in the milk yield.
Farm animals tend to lose appetite when it gets hotter, which affects their flesh and milk. To stem a possible decline in output, the institute under the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization is trying to figure out the best way to raise livestock, such as cutting their food into smaller pieces and feeding the animals in smaller portions many times.
According to one estimate, if global warming advances, Japan’s production of broiler chicken will drop by more than 15% by 2060, with farmers in western Japan suffering severer damage. And pigs are predicted to gain weight 15-30% slower than they currently do.
