Ishihara drops meeting with major environmental NGO at COP19 conferenceWARSAW -- Environment Minister Nobuteru Ishihara, here for the United Nations COP19 climate change conference, has declined a customary meeting with the international NGO Climate Action Network (CAN), it was learned on Nov. 21. "I couldn't make the time," Ishihara said, drawing criticism from members of CAN -- made up of over 850 environmental groups and other organizations around the world -- who said the minister ought to take this chance to hear the opinions of regular citizens both in and outside Japan. The Japanese environment minister has met with CAN representatives at every United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference since COP2 in 1996. This is the first time the Q&A session has ever been cancelled, and has left CAN -- whose members came to Warsaw to pass a letter directly to Ishihara demanding strengthened anti-global warming policy measures -- hanging.
