Bringing out the Buddha inside the wood: the act of carving of Buddhist images

I once heard a sculptor of Buddhist images describe the act of carving such a statue as ”bringing out the Buddha inside the wood.”
I remember being very impressed by the profundity of the statement.
One of the finest Buddhist images ever created is that of Bodhisattva Maitreya, shown seated in the half-lotus position, that is in Kyoto’s Koryuji temple. Forty-nine years ago, the statue’s right ring finger was broken when a student tried to kiss it.

I hear that young people are showing growing interest in Buddhist statues. We don’t have to undertake deep preparations to appreciate Buddhist images because there are no rules. But we must not touch or kiss such treasures, lest they be damaged. In fact, I think the ”five commandments” should add a sixth: a ban on such bad behavior.
